The Hangover Part II

The Hangover Part II is the overhyped sequel from Warner Brothers that everyone, including me, was excited for.  Unfortunately, the movie ends up being a disappointment and not does live up to the modern classic known as the first movie.  The only reason that this movie exists is because Warner Brothers wanted to capitalize on the success of the original Hangover.

The movie plays exactly as its prequel:  there is a person named Stu (Ed Helms) getting married and he and his best friends Alan, Doug, and Phil (Zack Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, and Bradley Cooper respectively) go out to Thailand (in the first one, it was Las Vegas) to celebrate.  On the flight to Thailand the "wolf-pack", as Alan calls the group, meet Stu's fiancée, Lauren (Jamie Chung) and her family tells her 16-year-old brother Teddy (Mason Lee) to join them.

This movie goes by the formula "if it ain't broke don't fix it", but it never works well in Hollywood.  The script seems like a paraphrase of the first one, but a more of a modernized version.  Despite that, all of the jokes are just as hysterical, just as stupid, and even more disgusting.  You will walk out of the theater at least laughing once.

The performances of the wolf-pack were very solid.  This time, though, I thought Cooper had given the sharpest performance out of the three.  Galifianakis acts just as corny and stupid as he was, and Helms gets just as pissed, just as emotional, and just as funny also.  They didn't execute as well as they had in the first, though.

Also, the movie included more of  Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong) after tons of requests to include more of him.  He's just as grand as ever.  Plus there was a brief performance by Paul Giamatti, who I hadn't heard much of after Sideways.

Overall, The Hangover Part II is a solid sequel, but in the end disappoints as it isn't as impressive as the first.  The movie isn't bad, but I cannot call it good either.  I give it a 2/4.
